Skylark Lake is my favourite lake at Westwood because of the fairness and mixture
of species that it has to offer. You can win a match from any peg!
The first tactic
I use is to fish tight across to the far bank in 18 inches of water with pellet.
I will be mainly targeting the lake’s large stock of carp from 1lb to 4lb. Feeding
this line is very simple, I trickle in softened Westwood Lakes micro pellets in dribs
and drabs and use a 4mm expander on the hook. Rig wise I keep it simple. A 4 x 10
or 4 x 12 Middy Carp Grey Series 3 tied to a Lo-
These hooks are extremely sharp which is what you need on Skylark
because of the amount of bites and fish you catch. This rig is matched up to 6-
The second tactic is to target the large stocks of ide,
tench, skimmers and bream. I target these in two ways, the first is to fish shallow
with maggots which has worked well for me, seeing me win two matches with over 120lb
of ide alone.
In order to achieve these weights I will take 6 pints of red and white
maggots and constantly catapult maggots across. Rig wise I use a small pollyball
set 6 inches deep tied to 0.16mm and tiny 3 inch 0.12 hook length with size 14 T63-
The other way is to fish chopped worm and caster down the track,
I feed this line heavily with plenty of caster, worm and corn. I usually opt for
this method in windy conditions. I beef up my terminal tackle because the tench and
barbel pull hard. Rig wise I use 4 x 16 Carp Grey Series 3 tied to 0.18mm mainline
and simple bulk and two droppers then beneath that 0.16mm hook length with size 14
T93-
When the weather warms up the margins are an excellent area to target. Virtually
every species can be caught and because of this I feed pellets and maggots tight
to the bank. You will be surprised what turns up!
All the methods I have listed are
match winning methods so get on the Skylark and give them a go.
